"Albertina"

Albrecht began his reign as a duke of Prussia with a decree to collect all the necessary books to realize his idea of making an educational institution for faithful church servants and other specialists in different spheres of knowledge. Some Kretus Rubenaus, who was appointed to conduct the process had greatly speeded it up. The first discussion of duke’s plan of building a university was held in 1540 and caused a harsh protest of the Kneiphoff’s deans. They were complaining on the lack of ground areas. But Albrecht insisted on realizing his idea. And in 1542 the first stone was put into the foundation of “Albertina”. A great money donation was made my duchess Dorotea. The grand opening of Königsberg University was held on 17’th August 1544. the first enrolment counted 318 students. The university was named as Albertina in honour of it’s founder duke Albrecht.
