The new construction

In 1840 the land-tag of Königsberg forwarded a petition about the construction of a strong fortification around Königsberg to the king. In the direction of the 12’th December 1841 the king Friedrich Wilhelm the IV appointed a special committee, which consisted of general von Grolman, von Krausen, and the chief of engineering corps lieutenant-general Aster. On the 5’th April 1843 the king had considered and affirmed the offered plan of fortification. The construction began with ceremonial laying of defensive casern “Kronprinz” (ul. Litovsky val).The total length of the defensive line had more than 15 km. The new town gates were built. Nowadays they are architectural monuments and attract the attention of citizens and tourists.
