In 1255 knights participating in the crusade captured Prussian fortification that was standing on a hill above the river Pregel. Soon a castle was built on this hill, and people started to settle around it. Thus arose the Konigsberg, and the castle was its heart. For centuries a high tower served as a beacon for all travelers arriving in Königsberg.
