Nok-Na-Rey
Folk music
The group “Nok-Na-Rey” was founded in March, 2004 in the circles of Celtomaniac society of Kaliningrad. The idea came because of the wish to present some Irish songs to friends and acquaintances. The first name of the group was “Heathy honey”, but it tuned out that there was already a group with such name. The name “Nok-Na-Rey” means from Gaelic “the mountain of kings” or “the king mountain”, or simply Koenigsberg. The choice of the name was accidental…while leafing through the book in search of some sonorous words. When Aleksey Popov, who came across this word, pronounced it, everybody realized…That is it!
The group plays traditionally and creatively arranged music of Celtic regions in Europe: Ireland, Scotland, and Britain. Moreover, there are some songs in Russian, which are translations of poems of Irish and Scottish poets, later on set on music. The instruments of the group are a guitar, a bass-guitar, bagpipes, a tin whistle, a flute, a mandolin, an accordion.
