The Bridge of Queen Luise

The steady motor-car bridge through across Neman was built in 1907 in honour of 100 jubilee of the Tilsits Treaty. The bridge of Queen Luise was exploded by german soldiers in order not to give it to the Soviet Army in 22nd of October 1944. The bridge was rebuilt in 1968. The beautiful portal of sandstone in the South part of the bridge wasn’t lost after the explosion but the queen’s bronze bas-relief was replaced by the National emblem of The USSR. The bronze letters of inscription “Koenigin Luise Bruecke” were removed. The date “1807” is on the bridge but in the date 1907 “0” was removed into “4” (1947 is the year of building of the first wooden bridge). The roofs of houses of the drawbridge were changed also. The spans lean on seven piers instead of four. The arch of the bridge is the symbol of the city and is on the emblem of the city.
