The King’s Castle

It’s called in honour of the founder of the city Czech king – Ottocar II Bogemians. He layed the foundation on 1255 on the place of Prussians’ colony Twangste. The castle was continuing build while the Duke Albrecht’s rule. The tower of castle church was rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style in 1864. the biggest hall called Moscowits. Three main events in the history of town is connected with it. They are reception of the Grand Embassy where Peter the Great presented incognito in 1697; coronation of Friedrich I in 1701 and Wilhelm I in 1861. The Amber Room was removed from Pushkin to King’s castle in December 1941. Before the attack of the city the Room was took to pieces again and removed to the dungeon of the castle. Since that time this work of art has been lost. Ruins of the castle was blown up in 1969. Now archeologists try to reveal the secrets of the king’s castle. The resent discovery is silver case with magic amulets. Probably they were used for astrological rituals.
