The church Juditen

The name of the church came from the name of old Prussian settlement. The time of building the bricks church Juditen has not been fixed exactly. It is known to be built in 1288. This is the oldest building from the number of which were kept in the town. At the end of the 14-th century it had been already known as the place of knight’s pilgrimage. The organ was set up in 1840. There were two bells, the altar and the pulpit in the renaissance style, valuable canvases and the subjects of church plate in the Church. There was a sculpture “Madonna on the half moon” that was the most ancient sculpture in Prussia. The church Juditen wasn’t practically damaged during the assault of Königsberg. The Germans carried out church service until 1948. After their extradition the church began ruining. It was decided to handle the ruins of the church Juditen to the Orthodox Church. At the beginning of the 1986 the church of St. Nicolay was sanctified. The church Juditen became the first Orthdox Church which was opened in the Kaliningrad after forty years of asceticism.
